Day 29 (08/06) - Dawson City to Twin Lakes

“Top of the World” Highway

Driving “Top of the World” highway to Dawson City from Chicken yesterday afternoon in the drizzly rain was a total surprise. I have been seeing cities and places call themselves “World’s Best XXX” or “XXX Capital of the World” all the time on this trip. When I decided to travel “Top of the World” Highway to come to Dawson City after visiting Chicken, I thought that would not be a big deal since I have come this far and must have seen them all. Not so, not for this Highway. The 79 miles “Top of the World Highway” is a narrow, winding road with no guardrails. Driving on the hilly section of the slippery road was quite a challenge. Moving on miles of the mountain ridge alone, I indeed had the thrill but uneasy feeling of hanging on the top of the world. That was the first time the confidence of me own choice became shaky. For a while, I did consider going back to Chicken but could not find a place safe enough to make U turn. So I continue on.

I remembered the very a nice couple, the Simpsons, I met in Chicken’s only Café during lunch time. They lived in Dawson City but visited Chicken regularly. Knowing where I was heading to, they told me to drive carefully and gave me one of Mr. Simpson’s own country music recording of Iditarod Trail songs. They told me nicely to listen to it to keep me awake while driving. Now, I know they must have concern of my safety driving alone this Highway.

In the end, I have come to Dawson City safely and enjoy a nice day here visiting this beautiful and friendly Klondike gold rush city. I am glad I had made the choice to come this way.

Dawson City was a gold rush boomtown in late 19 century when gold was discovered on Klondike River/Creeks

Wooden buildings are colorfully painted. Dawson City was declared as national historical site. Many properties are restored or reconstructed.
A nice and quite town
From Dawson City look across Yukon River and ferry boat is the south end of "Top of the World" Highway that I came from yesterday in misty rain

Moose crossing - on my way to Whitehorse via North Klondike Highway
