Day 16 (07/24) - Denali National Park

A Life-Out-Of-Control Moment

I had a quite scary driving experience yesterday on my way coming here to Denali National Park from Fairbanks.

It rained quite a bit. When I was driving on a section of the winding sloppy mountain road, rain started showing down so heavily that even the speediest rain wiper could not clear the windshield. I reduced the speed and drove carefully. What happened next was I noticed that there was a truck coming from the left hand passing lane. When it came parallel to my car I could feel the road shaking quite a bit. Then the water splashed from the ground like a reversed raging water fall. I did not turn my head around to see the truck, just concentrated on my own driving. The truck must be quite long; for 10, 15 seconds I felt like I was driving in a whirlpool not able to see the road in front of me. I realized that this was the moment I had totally lost the control of my life; the steering wheel might be in my hands but my life was not; there were a lot of things could have happened in that black-out 15 seconds.

Rain stopped shortly after that. When my mind recovered from that adrenaline charged moment I looked into the rear mirror and saw a police car following me for… I did not know how long. I soon resumed to the normal speed and he made a u-turn at one of the turnouts and left.

Thank you officer! And thank you God!
